TN Home Guard Recruitment 2025 – Power of Police
Home Guards personnel on duty possess the same authority as police officers in Tamil Nadu. When summoned by an order under Annex: 21, Section 6, members of the Home Guards are granted equivalent powers.
Entitlements and Safeguards
Members of the Home Guards are entitled to the same privileges and protections as police officers appointed under the Madras City Police Act of 1888 or the Madras District Police Act of 1859, as applicable.
Prohibition of Prosecution
No legal action may be taken against a member of the Home Guards without prior approval from the Chief of Police or the Superintendent of Police.
Eligibility Criteria for TN Home Guard Recruitment 2025
- Home Guard Membership: An individual must be at least 18 years old and not exceed the age of 50 years to qualify for membership.
- Regulations: An appointment order must be issued prior to the initiation of basic training.
- Physical Fitness: The candidate must possess good character and demonstrate physical fitness.
- Appointment Criteria: The individual should have either passed or failed the SSLC/X standard examination.
Procedures of Tamil Nadu Home Guard Recruitment
It is the view of the Commissioner of Police or the Superintendent of Police that an individual is suitable for appointment as a member of the Home Guard, following a thorough verification of their character and background. The duration of reappointment or extension for a Home Guard member shall not exceed three years at any given time.
However, the age limit outlined in clause (a) may be relaxed in specific cases, with written justification, by the Directorate of Home Guards to facilitate the recruitment of otherwise qualified candidates.
Prior to their appointment as a member of the Home Guard, each individual must sign a pledge of service in Form ‘B’ before the appointing authority or an authorized officer. In the case of reappointment or extension, a member may continue in their role until they reach the age of 58 years.
Each individual appointed to the Home Guard will receive a certificate of appointment in Form ‘C’. Members will serve for a term of three years and are eligible for reappointment, with the possibility of extending their period of service.
Duties & Responsibilities of TN Home Guards 2025
The responsibilities and roles of Home Guards members include:
- Managing traffic control points.
- Conducting beat patrols and night surveillance.
- Serving legal summons.
- Gathering information and intelligence.
- Managing crowd control.
- Assisting law enforcement in maintaining internal security.
- Fostering communal harmony by supporting the administration in safeguarding vulnerable segments of society.
- Engaging in socio-economic and welfare initiatives, including adult education, health and hygiene programs, development projects, and other beneficial activities.
- Mitigating panic, coordinating rescue operations, and providing relief during emergencies such as air raids, cyclones, floods, epidemics, earthquakes, and similar crises, as well as organizing firefighting efforts.
- Establishing functional units to deliver essential services, including motor transport, engineering and pioneer groups, fire brigades, nursing and first aid, and the operation of water and power supply systems.
