TN RTE for Free Admission in private schools Start 2025-26: The announcement regarding the 25% admissions in private primary schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act has been postponed in Tamil Nadu, raising concerns among parents. Usually revealed in late March or early April, the RTE admission timeline enables parents to organize and submit necessary documents including birth, caste, residence, and income certificates. In the previous year, the announcement occurred on April 1, followed by the commencement of online applications on April 20. This year, however, the delay has extended into May, with no official communication from the government.
Tamil Nadu: Complimentary Enrollment in Private Schools – What is the Start Date for Applications?
Reason for Delay in RTE Admission in Tamil Nadu
Each year, approximately 75,000 students receive free education from LKG or Class 1 through Class 8 under the RTE scheme, with more than 150,000 applications submitted annually.
The government compensates private schools for these admissions; however, reimbursements for the academic years 2023–2024 and 2024–2025 have not been disbursed. Consequently, over 400,000 students in 8,000 private schools are affected, with outstanding payments still owed by the state government. The central government’s failure to release funds for two consecutive years is cited as the cause of this financial delay.
Nevertheless, some believe that the Tamil Nadu education department is delaying the admission process due to this uncertainty. This lack of clarity has resulted in confusion and anxiety among parents. Parents are hopeful that the government will prioritize the issue of RTE student admissions and make a public announcement, similar to the actions taken by the Tamil Nadu government in paying salaries to employees of the Integrated Education Scheme, without waiting for the central government to allocate funds, despite the absence of such allocation.
Benefits of RTE Admission for the year 2025-26 in Tamil Nadu
The government of Tamil Nadu provides educational opportunities for disadvantaged children through the annual ‘Kaattaya Ilavasa Kalvi Scheme‘. In accordance with Section 12 (1) (C) of the RTE Act 2009, at least 25% of seats in unaided private schools are to be allocated for children belonging to Disadvantaged Groups and Economically Weaker Sections.
The application period is set to begin on May 2nd and will end on May 29th each year. Furthermore, the distance from the child’s home to the school must not exceed 1 kilometer. A Birth Certificate is an essential document needed for admission into Class 1 or LKG at any private school in Tamil Nadu for the academic year 2025-26.
Age Restriction and Lottery Draw Pattern in TN RTE Admission 2025
The admission age requirements are specified as follows: For LKG, children should be born between August 1, 2021, and July 31, 2022; for Class 1, the acceptable birth period is from August 1, 2019, to July 31, 2020. The selection process for children under the RTE Scheme in Tamil Nadu will be executed via an online lottery system overseen by the District Educational Authority offices, with the results being announced on the same day and posted on the school’s notice board.
